When global buyers returned to China for the Spring Canton Fair 2023, the conversations felt different from previous years. Many customers were not simply walking through the halls to collect catalogues or compare samples. They came back with new sourcing expectations shaped by several years of travel restrictions, supply chain disruption, changing foodservice demand and stricter packaging compliance requirements.
For Grizzlies, this was exactly why attending the fair mattered. The exhibition gave us a chance to meet distributors, restaurant supply companies, packaging importers, supermarket buyers and private label customers face to face, and to understand what they now expected from a reliable foodservice packaging manufacturer in China.
Why Spring Canton Fair 2023 Was Different for Packaging Buyers
The 133rd Canton Fair was an important return point for international sourcing. According to official reports, it was the first Canton Fair session to fully resume onsite exhibition after China adjusted its COVID-19 response, with overseas buyers attending both onsite and online. For foodservice packaging buyers, returning to an offline trade show was not only about seeing products again. It was about rebuilding confidence in suppliers. Many buyers wanted to check whether factories could still provide stable lead time, consistent quality, clear compliance documents and practical packaging options for restaurants, takeaway service and bulk distribution.
Buyers Wanted to Recheck Supplier Reliability
After several years of disrupted travel and changing freight conditions, many buyers became more cautious about supplier selection. At the booth, discussions often moved quickly from product appearance to practical questions: Can the factory support repeat orders? Is the lead time realistic? Can the same product quality be maintained across bulk shipments? Are export documents and packaging specifications clear?
These questions are especially important for buyers sourcing disposable food containers, paper food packaging, takeaway food containers, restaurant packaging and custom printed foodservice packaging in bulk. For a distributor or foodservice brand, a delayed order or unstable quality can affect warehouse planning, customer delivery and long-term sales programs.
Compliance Became Part of the First Conversation
One clear change at Spring Canton Fair 2023 was that compliance topics came up much earlier in buyer conversations. Customers were not only asking whether a product looked sustainable. They wanted to understand what documents could support the product in their target market.
Discussions included food contact materials, FDA-related food contact expectations, LFGB-related requirements, FSC paper sourcing, BPI certification options, OK Compost references and PFAS-free packaging directions. The FDA explains that food packaging and its components can be food contact substances, including materials used to prevent grease from leaking through paper or cardboard packaging. For paper-based packaging buyers, FSC also became a more common sourcing question. FSC chain-of-custody certification helps show that paper and packaging products using FSC-certified or controlled forest-based materials are supported by responsible sourcing and traceability processes. PFAS-Free Packaging Was Becoming a More Serious Buyer Concern
Grease resistance is important for foodservice packaging, especially for hot meals, oily food, fried food, sauces and takeaway delivery. But by 2023, more buyers were also asking how grease-resistant packaging could avoid unnecessary chemical risk.
In February 2023, ECHA issued a proposed restriction covering PFAS, a broad group of persistent substances used in many applications, including food contact materials and articles. Source: SGS summary of ECHA PFAS restriction proposal
For North American compostable packaging programs, BPI had already set requirements around fluorinated chemicals. BPI states that products may not be claimed as BPI Certified unless they meet conditions including no intentionally added fluorinated chemicals and a test report showing less than 100 ppm total organic fluorine. This is why PFAS-free food packaging and fluorine-free packaging directions became important discussion points at the fair. Buyers wanted packaging that could balance oil resistance, food contact safety, compostability or recyclability expectations and real foodservice performance.
Takeaway Packaging Had to Match Real Foodservice Use
Another practical sourcing expectation was performance. Customers were asking whether packaging could handle real restaurant and takeaway conditions, not only whether it looked good in a product photo. They wanted to discuss hot food, cold food, oily meals, sauces, salads, snacks, delivery stacking and storage.
At Spring Canton Fair 2023, Grizzlies discussed different foodservice packaging options according to buyer application, including paper food containers, takeaway boxes, disposable bowls, food trays, plates, paper cups and custom printed packaging. For many customers, the right packaging choice depended on the food type, sales channel, local regulations and end-customer experience.
European Buyers Were Watching Packaging Waste Rules
For buyers selling into Europe, packaging waste and circular economy requirements were becoming harder to ignore. The European Commission states that packaging rules aim to reduce packaging and waste, lower the use of primary raw materials and support a circular economy. The EU’s packaging direction includes making all packaging on the EU market recyclable in an economically viable way by 2030 and addressing substances of concern, including PFAS in food contact packaging under certain thresholds. This did not mean every buyer needed the same material or the same certification. But it did mean buyers wanted clearer communication before placing orders. They needed to know which packaging options were suitable for takeaway, which documents were available, and how a supplier could support compliance-ready foodservice packaging programs.
Custom Packaging Was No Longer Just About Printing a Logo
Many customers at the fair also asked about OEM and ODM packaging programs. But the discussions were more detailed than simple logo printing. Buyers wanted to know how to plan product sizes, material options, coating choices, carton packing, private label packaging, mixed container loading and repeat order schedules.
For distributors, restaurant supply companies and packaging brands, custom foodservice packaging needs to match local food habits, warehouse handling, delivery conditions, shelf presentation and market positioning. A successful private label packaging program is not only a design project. It is a sourcing, compliance and supply planning project.
What Grizzlies Discussed with Buyers at the Booth
During the Spring Canton Fair 2023, our team focused on practical buyer questions rather than general claims. We discussed how to choose packaging for different food applications, how to prepare documents for target markets, how to plan custom printed packaging, and how to manage bulk supply with realistic lead time.
These conversations helped buyers compare packaging suppliers more clearly. Instead of judging only by catalogue photos or unit price, customers could evaluate whether a manufacturer could support foodservice packaging projects with product performance, compliance awareness, export experience and stable factory production.
For Buyers Planning Their Next Foodservice Packaging Project
The return of global buyers to Spring Canton Fair 2023 showed that foodservice packaging sourcing had become more professional. Buyers were looking for suppliers who could provide clear answers on materials, documents, PFAS-free packaging directions, takeaway performance, customization and lead time.
If you are sourcing paper food packaging, takeaway food containers, disposable tableware, custom printed foodservice packaging or private label packaging programs, it is worth checking more than the product photo. Ask about food contact documents, paper sourcing, grease resistance, carton packing, MOQ, production planning and repeat order stability.
Grizzlies continues to support global B2B customers with foodservice packaging solutions for restaurants, distributors, supermarkets, catering service and takeaway supply. We provide factory-direct support for paper food containers, takeaway boxes, disposable tableware, custom printed packaging and OEM ODM foodservice packaging programs.
